Story Hours for Neighborhood Children are have become a regular feature of life in the Oaks, Sandalwood, Hilton Head Gardens, Bluffton House, and Simmons Cay. The format is simple; volunteers bring lemonade, cookies, and LOTS of books.
Recently, Beaufort County Library Staff have begun training volunteers for the Story Hour program. "Story Hour" has proven to be so popular with both neighborhood children and volunteers that the county library was happy to provide this new service.
Additional volunteers are needed for reading, scheduling, making phone
calls, follow up with sources for books, buying and storing supplies, budgeting and incorporating new ideas and activities for the children and their parents. The kids love to color and have suggested that we do art projects. Mentors for the children would also be very helpful. Book donations and "selectors" are needed. When we have a significant age difference in the children attending, it would be great to be able to divide the children into two or more groups to read age related stories or even tell our own stories.
These children are very bright and energetic. Some folks who like to do games or exercises could be incorporated to "wear off energy" - or introduce physical exercise for the good of the community. We are open to new ideas and look forward to training sessions from the Beaufort County Library Information Systems staff.
Our goal to "become neighbors and build friendships" is as important as the opportunity to be with the children and parents in selected neighborhoods.
We're looking for story topics which introduce ideas such as hobbies and scouting and nature appreciation as well as heralding holidays and also books which are bi-lingual. We can use any HELP we can get. Your talents, from telephoning, to computer input to referencing materials are welcome. This is not a cut and dry procedure, although we choose to follow a routine about sending invitations, standard refreshments and donation of the books we read to the Lending Library.
We welcome your talents and suggestions and new volunteers in any area at all times. We could use volunteers to help us who need to earn public service hours for their graduation from high school.
If you are interested, please call Loni Saunders 686-3990 or email her: DSAUND6560@aol.com. Thank you!
