NOC implemented its first Community Improvement Workshop on March 17, at Oaks Apartments complex.   More than 40 persons participated in this successful workshop led by Mario Martinez, a prominent leader in the Hispanic community.

The aim of the Community Improvement Workshop was to:
(a) Educate individuals and families in the neighborhood about their civic responsibilities to build a stronger community and to participate in community activities;
(b) Encourage individuals to develop new work skills and knowledge, and to learn English so that they can be employed and be productive; and
(c) Inform the Hispanic community of the status of immigration reform and encourage participation in the upcoming census.

Mr. Martinez emphasized the importance of education in building skills and knowledge so that individuals can find employment. He encouraged the participants to learn English and new job skills. He also pointed out the importance of keeping a clean record and avoiding unlawful activities. He discussed various ways in which individuals can contribute community services. The participants responded positively and agreed with the points made by Mr. Martinez. A number of individuals discussed the importance of taking advantage of the outreach programs provided by NOC at the Program Center at Oaks Apartment complex.
