NOC has given high priority to children’s programs. Volunteers are assigned to one to three children to help them with reading, basic English, and basic math. Some members of NOC’s Board of Directors are directly involved in this program. For example, NOC Board member Ellen Taylor tutors nine-year-old Cristian Hernandez every week.
"Christian is a very bright, intelligent student and a very sweet young person," Ellen says. "His parents strongly encourage him to excel in school, and Cristian is highly motivated. He uses a dry erase board to help him study and when I arrived today, he had listed on his board words that begin with "W" and was learning them on his own. Today we're reading a book about Dr. Dolittle who talks to animals. Cristian is reading the book to me." Ellen adds, "There are many families right here in Hilton Head and Bluffton who are struggling to make a living, empowering themselves and their children, and establishing a sense of community. The support and guidance we can offer is its own reward."
