NOC is partnering with the Beaufort County School District and the
Hilton Head Island IB Elementary School, an authorized IB School, to sponsor two education programs: The “Reading Bus” program for mothers and children up to 6-7 years and a “Virtual Summer Program” targeting rising fourth graders who need help in reading and math proficiency. NOC will assist by mobilizing support within the neighborhoods and contacting parents of students eligible to participate in these programs. The Beaufort County School District and the Hilton Head IB Elementary School will provide trainers and content material, as well as the bus for the reading program. Dr. Narendra Sharma, Chair, NOC, and Dana Gilbert, NOC Field Director, met with Angela Childers, from the Beaufort Housing Authority, and Cynthia Hunt, representing the Sandalwood Terrace Residents Councilto discuss logistics for identifying participants for the two programs. NOC will continue to work with Ms. Childers and Ms. Hunt, along with Patricia Purnell, Manager, Sandalwood Terrace Apartments, to launch these programs by the end of June. These programs will serve as a prototype for similar programs in other neighborhoods.
