Health Screening at Oaks
The two-day health screening at Oaks was highly successful. More
than 80 individuals, mostly from Oaks and a few from various other neighborhoods, took advantage of this free screening.
NOC partnered with the Lions Club to conduct this health screening, focusing on tests relating to vision, glaucoma, hearing, and blood pressure.
This health screening event was open to people who have no health insurance and only limited access to health care. The target population was people from Oaks, Sandalwood Apartments, Woodlake Villas, Hilton Head Gardens, and other area apartment complexes. For the Lions Club, this was a new experience to take support directly into the neighborhood. Generally, the Lions Club carries out health screenings in public places and schools.
Beside adults, a number of beneficiaries were young children. According to Manuel Holland and Steve Berch of the Lions Club, the overall result was significant and it would be worthwhile for the Lions Club to partner with NOC to conduct a similar event in Bluffton.
The Beaufort, Jasper, Hampton Comprehensive Health Services, Inc. also participated in this event to explain to women options for free mammograms.
A number of people left donations behind for the Lions Club program for children with vision problems. Many of the people have very little personal wealth and struggle to make ends meet, but they are generous and have big hearts.
NOC plans to conduct a similar health screening in Bluffton. NOC also plans to conduct health screening for prostate cancer in Hilton Head Island in October 2010.
