The first Girl Scout troop at the Oaks has been in full swing since February, 2010. Implemented by NOC in partnership with the Girl Scouts, the troop was formed following an initial planning meeting held on Feb 19, 2010 at the Oaks Community Center.

Julie Bell, the Girl Scouts Field Director, led the meeting in February to explain what Girl Scouts are and do, and to enroll individuals interested in becoming Girl Scouts or troop leaders. Weekly troop meetings at the Oaks Community Center began in early March.

The project was promoted by displaying posters in visible areas, including the NOC Program Center. To communicate directly with families, flyers were distributed door-to door to households in the Oaks neighborhood. Flyers and posters were also made available at Hilton Head Gardens and Sandalwood.

Girls participating in Girl Scout programs learn new skills, build character, and develop a deeper sense of community. Parents who participate as troop leaders develop leadership skills and a sense of accomplishment. They also foster values in the girls they lead in the troop.

Plans are underway to form a Boy Scout troop at the Oaks in the fall of 2010.
