Participants in NOC’s Neighborhood Soccer League received a firsthand demonstration of martial arts by John Robert Griswold, an NOC volunteer.   John Robert explained “martial arts" to children from Oaks Apartments and Hilton Head Gardens. He said that the martial arts, reflecting various styles of fighting and defense, were developed by different cultures throughout the world. He talked about two styles: the Muay Thai, a type of kickboxing indigenous to Thailand, and Jiu-Jitsu, which has roots in Japan and Brazil. Further, he talked about some benefits of the martial arts. He explained that one who learns martial arts is capable of defending him- or herself against aggressors.  Another benefit is physical fitness since martial arts is one of the most efficient and comprehensive workouts available. Lastly, he noted that mastery of martial arts can result in positive mental attributes, such as confidence and self discipline.   He told the participants that these characteristics will be helpful in academic, career, and social challenges.   NOC plans to conduct several classes in the martial arts over the next two months at its Program Center at Oaks Apartments Complex.
