On Thursday, June 3 family members and friends gathered at the NOC Program Center on Hilton Head Island to celebrate loved ones' accomplishments in English Proficiency. Teresa Ullman, NOC's Basic and Intermediate English Instructor, presented certificates, dictionaries, and flash cards to adult students who successfully completed the classes.

Students were also recognized for their individual accomplishments, such as perfect attendance and most progress from no English proficiency to a basic working knowledge of the language.

Teresa suggested that each student make a copy of the certificate to present to potential employers. She also encouraged students to continue their studies and become fluent in English. Teresa's adult students are very motivated for various reasons. Some want to be more marketable in the workplace, while some want to be able to help their children with homework. One student, a recent Hilton Head High School graduate, took the course in order to continue her education and keep her English skills fresh in her mind.

NOC offers basic and intermediate English, basic computer, and aerobics classes for adults, as well as workshops in household finance, workforce development, Medicaid benefits, public safety, and health screening. Classes for children include: arts and crafts, reading, and tutoring. Additional NOC children's programs include Girl Scouts and co-ed soccer teams.
